WILD SPENDING
AN ELDERLY SPINSTER’S ORGY EMBEZZLED 149,000 DOLLARS (Rec. 2.15 p.m. 7 NEW YORK, April 22. Anna Callahan, an elderly spinster, was sentenced to five years gaol at Trenton for embezzling 149,000 dollars from the bank where she was employed as a bookkeeper. The judge said Callahan went on a wild spending orgy, showering expensive gifts on fairweather friends, who deserted her when her defalcations were discovered. He added that in the five years period to February, 1946, Callahan spent 6000 dollars at one seaside resort, 26,000 dollars at a“n obscure tavern on the outskirts of Trenton, 800 dollars in other cafes, 800 dollars in tips to waiters, 7500 dollars for taxis and 16.000 dollars for luxury items. The embezzlement extended* over 15 years.
