BUILDING TARGET
NO DRASTIC CURTAILMENT OF PROGRAMME MINISTER’S EXPLANATION (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 23. The Dominion’s building programme for the year ended March 31 has not been drastically curtailed, nor has it been arbitrarily fixed by reference to financial considerations. This has been made clear in a statement by the Minister of Works, Mr. Semple, who said he wished to allay the erroneous impression which many people had apparently assumed, that the programme was being curtailed. “The nation is compelled to equate its building activities to the industry’s ability to cope with the job,” said Mr. Semple. “The Government’s policy is to build to the maximum of the material and labour available. That is the target set.” Constant attention was being paid by the officers of his department to the material supply position and to increased production, the Minister said. Furthermore import licences had been issued to the full extent necessary to take advantage of essential building materials from overseas. Any shortages of imported materials which existed to-day were not due to lack of import licences but to the inabilty of-overseas countries to supply*
