McClintock’s Feat Recalls Past Performances

The feat of M. McClintock in piloting seven winners, in addition to being associated with two runners-up and one third placegetter at the Reefton meeting, recalls some outstanding performances of the past. Some years back J. Dooley won all six galloping events at Beaumont. On the second day he was not so successful, having to be content with second place in all six races. In 1907, at Wairoa, W. Kirk rode; the last seven winners on the programme. Five of his triumphs came for the one owner. He completed doubles on Oakburn and Linkless, and added the County Stakes Handicap on Waiheka, all three horses being owned by Mr. E. J. White, of Hawke’s Bay. He also scored twice on Banker. On the second day he rode another four winners. At Townsville, Queensland. a jockey named W. Thomas rode seven winners in the one day; at Rotorua, J. Conquest rode six firsts and a second in eight mounts; H. N. Wiggins registered six firsts and a second in eight mounts at Dannevirke, five of the successes coming in a row. At Opunake, in 1930, M. Pine was associated with five firsts and a third, and two years later, at Ashhurst, he again saluted the judge on five occasions, was second once, and third once in seven mounts.

Several former horsemen have claimed excellent records during the course of a meeting, F. Kuku having captured as many as nine races, George Young eight, L. G. Morris and A. Whittaker seven each, and J. W. Nixon six. At an Auckland Christmas meeting H. N. Wiggins piloted seven winners, and then came down to Taranaki to add another.
