C.J.C Great Easter Prospects

Master Dash Fancied for . Monday [SPECIAL TO ‘'STAR."] CHRISTCHURCH, April 20. The Canterbury Jockey Club's autumn meeting will open at Riccarton on Monday. The fields generally are not as large as the nominations suggested, but are nevertheless well-* filled and contain some high-class horses from' various parts of New Zealand. The course will be in excellent order following recent rain and mild weather, and some excellent racing will be witnessed. The chief events will be the Great Easter Handicap, the Champagne Stakes and the Spckburn Handicap. Speculation will no doubt be widely distributed in the Great Easter Handicap, -with horses of the calibre of Master Dash, Pensacola and Findon at the head of the list, and then, further down, Da Vinci, Bruce, Whitley, Leigh Barton and Wantwood. Master Dash has a champion’s weight but he is an outstanding sprinter and most support should be forthcoming for him, Pensacola and the lightweight, Leigh Barton. Brilliant Fillies.

There is not likely to be a very strong field numerically for the Champagne Stakes, but the race will have widespread interest because of another clash between the brilliant two-year-old fillies Blue Trout and Palm Bearer. Both have shown winning form, and while Blue Trout may be the better sprinter in the meantime, Palm Bearer would appear to have the better prospects of mastering the six furlong journey. The field for the Sockburn Handicap includes last year’s winner, Lance Wing, who carried 8.2 and now has 8.5. He won over six furlongs and dead-heated over seven furlongs at Oamaru last month and should be in the right order for another solid effort at Riccarton. Findon will carry a lot of money if reserved, but the favourite will probably be Signal Officer. who is reported from Invercar-

gill to be in his best order.. AlSirat will have another opportunity to show his real value as a three-year-old. The distance should suit him. Grill will no doubt attract attention. His stable mate Prize Ring is also an acceptor but he will probably contest the hurdle race. Most support may be forthcoming for Lance Wing, Signal Officer and AlSirat.
