He repeated the promise to consult the Sudanese before any change was made in uieir status. “I wish definitely to deny any sug-gestion-that the Sudan Government is unsympathetic to Sudanese aspirations,” he said. “The Government aims’ at a free, independent Sudan which will be able, when its independence is achieved, to define foi itself its relations with Britain and Egypt. “With goodwill and the cessation of political upheavals, I see no reason why, even in the short space ol the next five years, a great advance should not bo made, and in the ensuing five years progress should bo sufficiently rapid to satisfy everyone except extremist critics.” In Cairo students at Fuad el Awal University went on strike in protest against Sir Hubert Huddleston's promise of self-government for the Sudan “in 20 years’ time.” At least 60 undergraduates are reported to have been injured in scuffles and fist fights during the strike. The fighting, in which the police intervened, is believed to have been caused by elements owing allegiance to the Moslem Brotherhood and the Wal'd.
