(Rec. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 20.

The Hunter river burst its banks at Eagleton last night and the police are gravely concerned about the safety of six farming families in the district.

The Eagleton postmastei'. and. his wife and child were rescued from a haystack by a police '.party in. a launch which had been brought seven miles overland. Another man, his wife and five children were rescued from a haystack after the police had rowed half a mile to reach them. Road blocks, washaways, landslides and floods, the sequel to four days’ continuous rain,.have dislocated' road communication in the Newcastle, Maitland, Cessnock and Wyong districts. The Newcastle-Sydney road is blocked by a sheet of water hundreds of yards wide near Wyong and hundreds of motorists are stranded. The Hunter river overflowed its banks in many places yesterday and thousands of acres of fodder crops are under water. There has been one drowning. The body of a nine-year-old boy was found in a stormwater drain. Darkness forced the police temporarily to abandon the search for several families. All are known to possess high haystacks near their homes and it is hoped they were able to reach these safety points. Twenty inches of rain has fallen in the Newcastle district in four days.
