FOOD SAVING

RESULTS FOR FIRST WEEK ANNOUNCED .

POSTAL DISTRICT FIGURES (P.A.) WELLINGTON, April 17. A total of 8833 butter coupons and 209,914 meat coupons were surrendered during the week ended Monday as part of the New Zealand campaign to provide more food for Britain by the, voluntary contribution of coupons for rationed commodities. These figures ate for the 20 main postal districts. When the. returns for smaller areas come in the present totals should be increased by several thousand. As each butter coupon has a value of. eight ounces, the week’s savings so far recorded represent 4416-i pounds, or nearly two tons of extra butter for export to Britain. As the British butter ration is three ounces a week, this quantity represent a week’s butter for betwe.en 23;,000 and 24/,000 "people. i" The meat position is not so easy to 'define, because price enters into the question. The face value of each coupon is threepence, and in England •the meat ration for carcase meat is 1/-. The winning district on a pro rata basis was Hamilton, with Blenheim and Wanganui breaking about even for second place. Wanganui’s contribution in surrendering 1014 butter coupons.w,as outstanding. Christchurch made the best showing of the cities. Detailed returns of coupons for the various postal districts are:—

The chairman of the Famine Emergency Committee, Mr. T. N. Smallwood, said to-night that results were better than expected considering that cards had been distributed in some districts only a few days ago, that in some areas the campaign had not been operating, and that publicity for the campaign would not be in full swing until the end of the week. ■ The campaign was also hampered by so many people stopping to argue instead of contributing. He was confident from now on that the figures would take a sharp leap upward because of better knowledge of the campaign. He felt gratified with the results.
