Food Exports Restricted.

New restrictions on the export oi processed foods and continuance of restricted supplies of barley for distillers were announced by the Food Minister (Sir Ben Smith) in the House of Commons. He explained that these steps were being taken as a result of the deterioration in the world’s food supply position. Export licences would not be issued for foods containing more than an insignificant quantity of ingredients in short supply. He warned British consumers not to expect a perceptible increase in supplies of processed foods in shops as a result of the restrictions. The Daily Telegraphy commenting on the announcement, says that the immediate loss of | trade probably does not exceed half of 1 per cent, of the value of 1946 exports, but the recovery of export markets for valuable processed foods will be delayed.—London, April 16.
