Indian Communists’ Demand

(Rec. 1 p.m.) NEW DELHI, April 17

Indian Communists demanded a declaration from Britain recognising Indian independence and the complete withdrawal of British troops from all Indian territory within six months. .The demand was made in a memorandum presented to the British mission by the Communist Party’s leader, Mr. P. C. Joshi, in an interview with members of the Cabinet. It stated that declaration should be made irrespective of whether India’s political parties settled their differences. It added that an attempt to exploit the differences between the Indian people, impose arbitrary partition and retain the princes to perpetuate a British Dominion, would “be resisted by the people with all the strength at their command.”
