IMPORTS
Cotton and linen piece goods and petroleum products were the'imports on which New Zealand spent most money last year, according to the latest Abstract of .Statistics. The piece goods cost £4,861,231, approximately three-quarters of which was spent with the United Kingdom. The value of the petroleum products was £3,044,878, more than £1,000,.000 of Which was represented by motor spirit from Peru, more than £500,000 by crude petroleum, fuel oil, etc., from Curacao, and just under £500,000 by lubricating oil from the United States.
New Zealand spent £2,681,678 on electrical machinery and equipment, £1,821,810 in the United Kingdom, and £623,479 in the United States. Almost all the silk and artificial piece goods (£2,469,135) came from the United Kingdom. Wheat imports were valued at £2,320,445, from Canada (£2,161,671) and Australia (£158,774). Other major imports were: Sugar, £1,'982,475 (chiefly from Australia), unmanufactured tobacco, £1,043,640 (almost all from the United States), woollen piece goods, £1,326,117 (more than £1,000,000 from the United States), woollen piece goods, £1,326,117 (more than £1,000,000 from the United Kingdom); iron and steel, £1,394,976 (from the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Canada); tractors and parts; £1,084,087 (chiefly from the United States); fertiliser, £990,035 (two-thirds from Makatea); tea, £905,729 (almost three-quarters from the United Kingdom). ®
