HOKITIKA MONTHLY MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL

At the monthly meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council a letter was received from the Westland County Council pointing out the serious effect to the production of Westland box factories that the embargo the Director of Forestry had placed on the export of white pine butter boxes from the South to the North Island would have. Cr. S. G. Havill was appointed to represent the council at a conference of local authorities to be held on Monday, March 25. The Mayor' (Mr. A. R. Elcock) presided at the meeting, which was also attended by Crs. H. C. Peart, S. ,G. Roberts, T. S. Ross and S. G. Havill.

Receipts for the month amounted to £3620/8/- and expenditure to £1576/12/6. Accounts amounting to £666/14/9 were passed for payment. Repairs to the pavilion at Cass Square were authorised. The abattoirs report was as follows:—Stock slaughtered for month of February amounted to six cows, 27 heifers, 63 bullocks, 219 sheep, 78 lambs, 10 pigs, 10 calves; condemned, one pig. Fees collected for month amounted to £B2/4/8. Fees for corresponding month last year, £BO/3/1. A letter was received from the secretary of the Hokitika Progress League stating that the league wished the council to appoint a representative to its council, which consisted of the executive and the chairmen of the various sub-committees and representatives of the local bodies, and asking if the council would cooperate by appointing its representative in time for the council meeting to be held about the 21st inst. —Cr. Ross was appointed to represent the council.

The Hokitika Beautifying Society wrote forwarding a list of trees suitable for planting in the borough and asking the council to peruse the list and intimate which trees the council would approve of the society planting in the borough at some future date. The society also thanked the council for the promise to tarseal the road in Fitzherbert street to the edge of the hydrangea plot.—The matter was referred to the chairman of the Works and Reserves Committee. Advice was received that members of the Main Highways Board were to visit Hokitika. An invitation was extended to the council to meet the board and bring any special matters to its notice.
