FIRE AT HOTEL

TWO MEN KILLED. DANNEVIRKE, December 8. Two men are believed to have perished when the Club Hotel, a twostoreyed wooden building of more than 50 rooms, was destroyed by fire early this morning. The victims are believed to be: — James Dundas Booth, aged 50, woolclasser, Petone. James McPherson, farmer, Te Rehunga. Buildings in the immediate vicinity were in danger when the blaze was at its peak. The railway station across the road had its paint badly ■ blistered. The hotel contained 35 bedrooms and was a “full house” when the fire occurred. It was believed that all the occupants except one had escaped, but other human remains were found this morning. The buildings and furniture were owned by the licensee, Mr. C. W. Merrylees, well known in sporting circles, who estimates his loss at about £20,000. The Club Hotel, built between 50 and 60 years ago, survived a disastrous blaze on Labour Day in 1917. The building was insured for £7150.
