COUPLE’S INJURIES

WOMAN’S ARRESTED NEW PLYMOUTH, Dec. 9. Head injuries that later proved fatal were inflicted by an assailant on Massey Amundsen, aged 33, in a dwelling he occupied at Manunui, near Taumarunui, on Saturday afternoon. He was taken to the Taumarunui Hospital, where he died, shortly after 1 o’clock this morning. The discovery of Amundsen followed the collapse of Mrs. Hine Kahu, aged 22, of Manunui, on the doorstep of the house of neighbours, Mr. and Mrs. E. Walshe. She was suffering from severe head injuries, apparently inflicted with a hammer, and hei’ throat had been gashed. She was taken to the Taumarunui Hospital, and is in a grave condition. When Mrs. Walshe found Mrs. Kahu she ran to Amundsen’s house for assistance and discovered Amundsen lying severly injured. Mrs. Kalin’s six-months-old child was also at Amundsen’s house. Late on Saturday afternoon, , the woman’s husband, Ivan Manfred Kahu, a labourer, aged 27, called at the police station, and subsequently was arrested and charged with the attempted murder of his wife. He will appear in the Magistrate’s Court at Taumarunui- to-morrow. WOMAN DIES.

TAUMARUNUI, December 10. Mrs. Hine Piri Kahu, the second victim of the Manunui tragedy, died in hospital this morning. The accused, Ivan Manford Kahu, was charged before Justices to-day with the murder of his wife, Hine Kahu, and was remanded to Auckland on December 17.
