SOME FOR MARMALADE WELLINGTON, September 15. A release of 31b of sugar a person for marmalade making will be made from September 24. This was announced by the Minister of Supply (Mr. Sullivan) to-day. The Minister said that because of the acute position of sugar stocks last year it had not been possible to follow the practice of previous years under rationing and make a distribution of sugar for marmalade making. The scarcity had continued till very recently, when an improvement in the shipping position had made it possible for sugar ration scales and allowances to be restored to the rates operating before the allround reduction was introduced last March. As a result, from October 1, the four-weekly consumer ration reverted to 31b a head, each coupon from No. 49 onwards having a value of 12 oz. Likewise, the scale rates to collective consumers and allocations to manufacturers would be increased from October to the extent that they were'reduced in March. More important still, applications through the Rehabilitation. Department from returned servicemen for allocations of sugar for setting themselves up in business using sugar could again be considered by the Rationing Controller. The Minister concluded by issuing ,a warning that the sugar supply for 1946 was still uncertain. “Since I made my recent announcement in the House that we were assured of receiving in full our 1945 allocation, cabled advice has come from London indicating that a further reduction in our sugar allocation is a possibility next year.”
