HOCKEY, AUCKLAND, September 13. Two unbeaten teams from the South Island, Otago and Canterbury, met in the Dominion women’s hockey tournament, Otago winning by 4 goals to 2 after a match full of incident. It provided a fine exhibition of hockey. Canterbury led at one stage 2-0, the halftime score being 2-all. Conditions were ■good. Results:—Otago 4 (M. Eaton 2, L. Harding, D. Cowan), Wanganui 1 (M. Wallis). CHESS TOURNAMENT. (Rec. 11.45 a.m.) SYDNEY, September 14. Lazare and Steiner are now level in the Australian chess championship. Lazare was defeated in last night’s games by the Victorian, Watson, and Steiner was held to a draw by Wade. The New Zealander played well to secure a draw. Crowl’s sequence of victories was broken by Purdy, who played a fine positional game and won in a difficult ending by incisive play involving a Queen sacrifice. The title-holder, Koshnitsky, lost to M. Green.

Leading scores after 10 rounds are: Lazare and Steiner each 7|, Wade Purdy and Crowl each 61. Green 51 (with one adjourned), Koshnitsky. Watson and Klass each 5, and Goldstein with 41 (with two adjourned).
