REBUILDING LONDON
MARINE BATTALION’S PROGRESS "RUGBY, July 19. In exactly 12 months since its formation to make good flying bomb damage in July, 1944, a special Royal Marine ’ Battalion. has- made nearly 85 000 houses habitable in the London area and there are only 700 officevc and men in the Battalion. Over 1000 of these houses were “second aid” cases —a house that required extensive repairs and in some cases complete rebuilding from ground level. , . , . „ ■The Battalion, which is continuing its “second a ; d” at the rate of 100 houses- a month, has its headquarters at Sydenham, near London. About half the Marines drafted to it were building craftsmen, skilled or semiskilled. The majority had not joined under the “tradesmen” category, but had been on active service in various parts of the world on normal Marine duties. To-day Marines who have been prisoners of war or have been wounded or placed in low medical categories, aild men on compassionate posting make up the greater part of the unit.
