' The peace celebrations commenced on Wednesday morning at nine o’clock with the blowing of the mine whistles for half an hour. Residents assembled at the Post Office and paraded to the Miners’ Hall where a thanksgiving service was held. In the evening a fancy dress dance was held, being attended by a large crowd, visitors being present from Ikamatua and Blackwater. Numerous novelty items were presented during the evening. Music for dancing was provided by Mrs Ramsden and Messrs E. Foulsham and Lines Messrs T. Sullivan and S. Ramsden were M.’s C. Supper was provided by the women. The celebrations were carried along on Thursday with a big parade of decorated cars, lorries, bicycles, prams and numerous other vehicles, followed by a large number of residents. In the evening a children’s fancy dress ball was held in the hall, which was decorated with streamers and coloured lights. The grand parade of children saw many and varied costumes, for which the judges, Mesdames F. Rose and H. Le Compte, awarded the following prizes:—Girls, most original: Hazel Brown; most fancy: Avis Ramsden; most representative: Jean Devescovi; most amusing: Anne Maher and Enid Gill; cheapest: Lois Dobbin. Boys, most original: Jack Hall: most fancy: John Ramsden' most representative: Robert Fraser: most amusing: Robin Symons; cheapest: Trevor Mitchell. The following awards were made in the age groups, under six years, girls, Kathleen Smith 1, Lorna Stephens. 2, Frances Brett 3. Boys: Robert Wills 1, Kelvin Lines 2, Tommy Elgin 3. Six to ten years, girls: June Hall 1, Shirley Fattorini 2, Colleen Connors 3. Boys: Barry Symons 1, Lindsay Roundhill 2, Joe Wynne 3. Ten to 15 years, girls: Edith Waters 1, Joan Ward 2. Leila Thomas 3. Boys: lan Dobbin 1, Jim Costigan 2, Trevor Lines 3. Special prizes were awarded to Lance Dean,. .Robin Symons. John Devescovi., Billy Prendergast Garth Ramsden, John Wilson, Frances Thorn, Roy Fattorini, Colleen White, June Hall, Roy Ward. Alma Willis. The chairman, Mr T. R. Hogg, also presented the following prizes for decorated vehicles in the afternoon parade:—Best decorated pram: Janet Lines 1, Kathleen Costigan 2, Judith Wilts 3. Besl decorated car: Mr F. Rose. Other vehicles: Robert Frazer 1. Kelvin Lines 2, Robert Wills 3.
