RACING AND TROTTING

MEETINGS TO COME. April 28:Waikato. April 28: Poverty Bay. April 28: South Canterbury.

TROTTING. .

May 5: Waikato Combined. May 5: Forbury. June 2 or 4: Ashburton.

Excellent Showing: Rockery, whe is booked for steeplechasing this season, gave an excellent display over five of the steeplechase fences at Riccarton yesterday.

Big Win Reported: Dark Morning, winner of the concluding event at Hastings, is a five-year-old gelding by Baffles from Lady Willonyx, and his success is reported to have brought off an extensive betting move. He is trained at Hastings by W. D. Young.

Died of Fright?: Monetary is believed to have died of fright when A. E. Didham’s stables were recently burned. He was found dead in his box when a stable attendant entered to remove him. It is reported that Didham did not have any insurance on his property.

Apprentice Allowances: .John Gay and Lord Advocate will each claim a 71b. allowance in the Doncaster Handicap at Washdyke to-morrow, making their weights 8.7 and 8.3 respectively. This will be the lowest weight carried by John Gay for a long while, and if the track is firm, he will be well in the running at the finish.

A Loss: The win of First In in the Great Autumn Handicap drew further attention to the loss the breeding world suffered in the death of First In’s dam, Gobble, when foaling to Defaulter. First In has proved a brilliant performer. Another of the progeny of Gobble was Skyrena (by Sky Blue) who was a useful and hardy splinter winning a good share of races at West Coast meetings.

Canterbury Trained: Rockery, owned by Mr. C. L. Kettle, of Greymouth and trained by R. E. Johnston, at Riccarton, has been nominated for the Great Northern Hurdles and the Great Northern Steeplechase. . Maggiore, owned by Mr. H. Dowling of Greymouth, has also been entered for both jumping events. Other South Islanders in the hurdles’ list are: As Required, Valantua, The Vulture and Fairy Bard (all in the hurdles).
