MOTOR CYCLIST KILLED OAMARU, December 28. A fatal accident occurred on the main south road on Dewar’s Hill about two miles north of Maheno shortly before 11 o’clock last night, when a motor cycle ridden by Flight Sergt. Alan Stuart Paterson Herbert crashed into a car driven by Patrick Greaney. The motor cyclist was killed apparently instantaneously. BATHER DROWNED. AUCKLAND. December 27. A young Auckland woman, who was spending a holiday with other members of her family on the West Coast, was drowned while bathing on the beach at Karekare this afternoon. She was Miss Eulalie Purdom, aged about

Miss Purdom was bathing in comparatively shallow water, when she evidently stepped : into a deep channel formed in the ■ sand by the tide, and disappeared. • Members of the Piha Life-Saving I Club, assisted by local residents and . holiday makers, located her after a ■ long search, but efforts at resuscitation failed. GAMING HOUSE FINE. AUCKLAND, December 28. Mary Elizabeth Story, married, 56. was fined £lOO by Mr. Luxford on a charge of using a dwelling she occupied with her husband and family of five, as a common gaming house. Accused said she was acting on commission for a bookmaker whose name she refused to give. Detective-Sergeant Tretheway said the accused’s husband was convicted 1 three times for bookmaking. “The bookmaking fraternity is get- 1 ting more cunning,” said the Magis- 1 trate. It is becoming apparent since the Court warning that second of- ( fenders would be sent to prison, there ; is a suggestion of dummyism. If that is going to be the case the Court is not going to hesitate to send first of- ■ fenders to prison when convicted of using premises as common gaming houses. The Magistrate ordered the pay- ] ment of the fine immediately, in de- 1 fault two months’ imprisonment. (
