Mr F. G. Dobson,, of Christchurch, is relieving Mr F. E. Taylor, manager of the Bank of New South Wales, Greymouth, for holidays. Rev. L. J. Boulton Smith, Oxford Terrace Baptist Church, Christchurch, was to-day elected as vice-president and president-elect of the Baptist Union of New Zealand.—P.A.

In honour of her approaching marriage, Miss A. Ryan, Rotomanu, was tendered a gift evening in the hall, when she received useful kitchen gifts. Several speakers expressed thanks for her services as postmistress.

Mr N. C. Manchester, accountant on the staff of the Union Bank of Australia, Greymouth, has received notice of transfe'r to Waimate. His successor at Greymouth has not been announced.

The death occurred on Wednesday, at Dunedin, where he had gone for treatment, of Mr. Robert Matthew Baird, of Kokatahi. Mr. Baird, who was born at Kokatahi 57 years ago, was a farmer. Beside his widow and family of two daughters and one son, he is survived by one brother, Mr. John Baird, of Rotomanu, and three sisters, Mesdames C. Rose, of Greymouth, and Dixon and R. Baird, of Kokatahi.

Inspector H. Scott, of Palmerston North, has been appointed superintendent of police in Christchurch from December 1, when Superintendent T. Shanahan, of Christchurch, will retire. Sub-Inspector J. B. Young, who has been in charge of the detective office in Christchurch, has been promoted to the rank of inspector from December 1, and has been transferred to Invercargill. His successor in Christchurch will be Senior-Detective T. E. Holmes, of Dunedin? who has been promoted to the rank of subinspector. Each officer has served in Greymouth.
