BOXING

PATRICK—CALTAUX MATCH

SYDNEY, November 2.

For his fight against the Australian welter-weight champion, Vic. Patrick, at the Sydney Stadium on Saturday night, the New Zealander, Vic. Caltaux, expects to receive about £750. For his first professional fight about six years ago, Caltaux received £l2. Saturday’s gate receipts seem sure to exceed £4OOO, a capacity house of 15,000 being expected to see the eagerly-awaited match. Caltaux is particularly fit. He has boxed more than a hundred rounds as part of his preparation. Added to this, hours of other gymnasium exercises and miles of road work have brought him right to his peak. “I intend to crowd Patrick from the first bell,” said Caltaux in a published statement to-day. “He will find out I know how to handle southpaws. I am in the best condition of my career, and hope to beat Patrick like I beat the American, Garvey Young, in New Caledonia. Americans thought Young was an outstanding contender for Freddie Cochrane’s world welter-weight championship before they both joined up. Sydney people think Patrick will beat me, too. I knocked Young out, and I think I can do the same to Patrick. They say Patrick can punch, but so can I. Patrick, his confidence supported by a singularly impressive, ring record, is equally sure of victory in a match which is billed as being for the welter-weight championship of Australia and New Zealand. DUNCAN v/UNDERWOOD HASTINGS, Nov. 3. Jack Duncan, of Ngaruawhia, defeated Ernie Underwood, of Auckland, on points in a professional welterweight boxing contest last night.
