WESTLAND COUNCIL MEETING

The Westland Patriotic Council met ; at Greymouth last evening, there being present: Messrs A. R. Elcock .1 (chairman), W. Clayton, K. O. May, C. Hart, T. G. Jamieson, M. H. Housjton, W. A. Nicol, and W. H. G. Park I (secretary). ' The Secretary presented the following financial statement for September: —Receipts: Hokitika Savings Bank, £10; Barrytown School children,‘£l; Kokatalii Committee, £25 <)/-• Franz Josef Women’s Institute, £5; Butler Bros., Ltd., and employees, £3O; Butler Bros., Ltd., and employees (special donation) £59; Evans Creek School children, 10/-; Koiterangi Committee, £3l; Waitaha Committee, £7/6/3; Ross Committee, 10/11, and' £43 in Victory Bonds; N.P.F.B. joint Council receipts, £9 18/6; N.P.F.B. share race meetings, £716/18/8; Hokitika Committee, £63 11/11; total, £960/5/3. Expenditure: N.P.F.B. Account quota, £3000: parcels accounts. £34/8/3; general expenses, £5/5/-; total, £3039/13/3. Provincial levy (with quotas in parentheses: Greymouth Borough, £5714/9/7 (£3820); Hokitika Borough, £1494/13/7 (£1226); Runanga Borough, £lB4/16/- (£506); Ross Borough, £226/18/6 (£120); Kumara Borough, £ll5/9/- (£110); Brunner Borough £lO2/13/9 (£430); Westland County, £2032/11/3 (£2280); Grey County, £614 4/7 (£2140): Inangahua County, £1675/2/9 (£1368); total, £12,160 19/- (£12,000. Deposits and securities £30,648/11/-; credit current account, £ll3l/4/1. Members commented adversely on the state of the Grey County and Brunner Borough quotas, and it was resolved that both Councls be asked to take steps to improve their results. The National Patriotic Fund Board advised that a previous offer of American sweets had been withdrawn. — The ' Chairman stated that the women’s committees dealing with the parcels had been advised. The Internal Affairs Department advised that Mr E. R. Neale, of Nelson, had been appointed to represent the Nelson, Marlborough _ and Westland Councils on the National Patriotic Fund Board for a further year. In a later letter the Department stated that the appointment of a representative from each Provincial . Council to the Board had been approved, and the Westland Council was asked to nominate a representative.—On account of the difficulty involved in a member attending meetings of the Board every month, it was decided to ask Mr Neale to continue as the Westland representative.

The Chairman and Secretary were deputed to arrange for the Council’s representation at the Dominion conference in Wellington on November 15. *

Copies of remits for the annual conference were received.

The Chairman tabled a copy of draft rules for the Council. —It was decided that copies be circulated preparatory to discussion at the next meeting. On the motion of Messrs May and Jamieson it was resolved that the Council re affirm its adherence to the principle of raising patriotic funds by taxation and that the delegates to the annual conference be instructed to support a remit to that effect.
