ST. COLUMBA CLUB
ANNUAL BANQUET
The annual wind-up banquet of the St. Columba Literary and Debating Club was held in Columba Hall on Monday evening, when Mr M. G. Kelly (president) presided over an attendance of about 40, including representatives of the West Coast Old Boys’ Association and the United and Runanga Debating Clubs. The following toasts were honoured: —“The Pope and the King” (the President); “West Coast Old Boys’ Association” (proposed by the Chairman and responded to by Mr F. Williams); “Kindred Clubs” (Mr W. A. Gilbert —Messrs H. W. Hay and H. A. S. Rollinsbn (United) and W. Wick and Ron. McTaggart (Runanga); “St. Columba Club” . (Mr G. Webster—Mr M. L. Daly); “The Judges” (Mr G. Walters—Mr R. T. Bush); “The Clergy and Marist Brothers” (Mr J. J. Keating—Rev Father Flaherty and Rev. Bro. Egbert).;. “Absent "Members,” Mr M- JGallagher—Mr M. Power); “The Press” (Mr B. W. Caulton —Mr O. Mortis); “The Artists” (Mr Morris— Messrs W. B. Hutton and F. W. Coleman); “The Chairman” (Mr J. P. Gilbert—Mr Kelly). Items were contributed by Messrs W. B. Hutton, T. Hatch, J. Beban, D. Tait and F .W. Coleman, ©the lastnamed presiding at the piano and leading community singing. RUNANGA CLUE To bring the season to a close, the Runanga Literary and Debating Society held their annual banquet on Saturday evening, and there was a iarge gathering of members and representatives from other clubs. Mr W, Wick presided, and the following toasts were honoured:—“The King,” ‘Our Noble Selves” (Mr J. Richmond), “The Art of Debating” (Mr W. Wick—Mr S. Braithwaite), “Kindred Sports” (Mr F. Baxendale — Messrs H. Webb, W. Paterson, Hpbt. McTaggart, O. Morris, W. Gilbert): “Other Debating Clubs” (Mr W Williams —Messrs G. Walters, J. Keating and T. Power), “The Colts” (Mr A. Keown—Mr W. Downes), “Absent Members” (Mr Ron. McTaggart—Mr S. Braithwaite), “The President” (Mr R. McDonald—Mr J. Richmond). “The Ladies” (Mr H. Webb —Mr W. Downes), “The VicePresident, Secretary and Executive” (Mr R. Bowman—Mr W. Patterson), “The Winners of Competitions” (Mr W. Wick—Messrs S. Braithwaite and W. Williams).
