OCTOBER RETURNS
VITAL STATISTICS.
The vital statistics for Greymouth fot October reveal that there were 13 more births registered last month than in October, 1943, and nine more deaths. Marriages increased by eight. Detailed figures, with the comparative figures for October, 1943, in parentheses, were as follow: Births, 34 (21); deaths, 19 (10); marriage notices issued, 12 (four); marriages by Registrar, four (nil). CUSTOMS COLLECTIONS. The collections under all headings at the Customs Office, Greymouth, last month totalled £28,438/17/11, as compared with £26,955 in the corresponding month of last year, an increase of £1,483. Detailed figures, with comparative figures for the corresponding month of last year in parentheses, were as follow:—Customs, £3,429/12/8 (£3,083). Sales tax, £3,333/13/4 (£3,521). War expenses sales tax, £5,741/14/3 (£913), War expenses, other, £8,032/3/2 (£12,416). A WET MONTH October was a much wetter month in Greymouth than the corresponding period of last year, rain falling on 26 days compared with 19, the fall being 7.38 inches against 6.35. The heaviest precipitation was 82 points on the 28th, whereas in October, 1943, 1.54 inches fell on the 23rd. The amended figure for the year’s fall to date is 99;16 inches, compared with 85.10 inches for the same period of last year. CHRISTCHURCH Revenue collected by the Customs Department at Christchurch during the last seven months of the present financial year was £1,922,364, compared with £1,668,709 in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. During last month customs revenue collected at Christchurch was as follows, comparative figures for October, 1943, being given in parenthesis: Customs, £56,992 £55,174); beer, £25,347 (£19,384)sales tax, £48,297 (£42,162); war expenses, £141,923 (£130,275). Total £272,559 (£246,995). WELLINGTON Customs returns for Wellington for October are as follow with the figures for October, 1943, in parenthesis:— Customs. £230,635 (£268,508); sales tax, £107,764 (£99,234); beer duty, (£13,551); war tax, £383,58/ (£384,864).
