TEACHER MISSING
HASTINGS, October 31. Believed to have been drowned in the Tukituki River at Haumoana on Sunday evening, a search is being made by the police , for the body of Father Lawrence Smith, of Hastings, master at St. John’s High School, who has been missing since Sunday Yesterday morning the non-ap-pearance of Father Smtih caused an
investigation to be made. It was discovered that his bed in his room at the Presbytery had not been used during the night. It was learnt that late on Sunday afternoon he was seen riding a bicycle in the direction of Haumoana. Later in the' morning, a report was' received by the police of the finding of clothing on the bank of the Tukituki River. Subsequently the clothing was identi-
fied as belonging to Father Smith. Dragging operations are being carried out. Father Smith came to Hastings about a year ago. He is about 30 years of age and was teaching at the Catholic High School.
