Mr. J. B. Kent left,/this morning, for Wellington, to attend a conference of the Power Boards,’ Association. The Duke of Gloucester has been promoted to the rank of general in the Army and air chief marshal in the Royal Air Force.;—B.O.W. Rev. W. S. Brettell’; Runanga, will leave, this evening, to attend the ■ General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church at Hastings. Rev. T. G. Campbell, Greymouth, will leave tomorrow. The death occurred at Christchurch, yesterday, of Miss Mary Ann Joseph, formerly of Greymouth. Deceased, who was aged 70 years, was a sister of the late Mr. Watkin Joseph, whose death occurred in September last. The funeral will take place at Karoro Cemetery to-morrow. Rev. Canon F. L. Hughes, Temporary Chaplain to the Forces, First Class (Territorial Army), has been appointed Chaplain General to the Forces in succession to the Rev. C. D. Symonds, who has retired on retired pay, on account of ill health. Canon Hughes has been appointed for two years.—B.O.W.

A London e cablegram stated that the Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr. Assheton) has accepted Mr Churchill’s invitation to become chairman of the Conservative and Unionist Party, in succession to Mr. T. L. Dugdaie, M.P., who resigned the chairmanship owing to ill-health. Mr. Assheton’s appointment necessitates his resignation from his treasury post.

The High Commissioner for Australia (Mr. d’Alton) announced that Mr. W. R. Carney has arrived from Australia to take up the position of commercial secretary at his office in Wellington. Mr. J. L. Menzies, who was formerly commercial secretary, has been appointed to a post in the commodity and export control division of the Department of Commerce and Agriculture, Melbourne. — P.A.

The death has occurred of Miss Kathleen Davies, who served as a nurse in Egypt and England in the last war and was awarded the Royal Red Cross Medal. Miss Davies was later matron of the Bowen Street Hospital, Wellington, retiring a number of years later. She became a victim of rheumatoid arthritis and spent a number of years abroad attempting to recover from it. For some years after her return to New Zealand Miss Davies had been confined to bed. Captain Davies, Marine Superintendent at Auckland, and Mr. A. C. Davies, Auckland, are brothers.—P.A.
