A London cablegram announced the death of Dr. E. W. H. Groves, a prominent surgeon. He was born in 1872.

Miss E. Turner, tutor sister of the Masterton Hospital, has been appointed matron of the Gore Hospital, subject to the approval of the Health Department.

The death has occurred at Auckland, of Mr. James A. Sherriff, who retired recently after having been secretary of New Zealand Newspapers, Ltd., for 32 years. - He was 66 years of age.—P.A.

Mr. W. T. Ogilvie, Mr. A. R. Wallis, and Mr. K. O. May left; this morning, for Christchurch to attend a meeting of the West Coast Sawmillers’ Association. Mr. J. S. Robertson will leave for Christchurch this evening.

Right Rev. Dr. P. F. Lyons, Catholic Bishop of Christchurch, will arrive in Greymouth, this afternoon, for a conference of West Coast clergy. He will return to Christchurch tomorrow.

Mrs. D. Faris, Hall Street, Cobden, has received advice that her son, Douglas, who is training with the R.N.Z.A.F., in Canada, has received his wings.

Cpl. A. E. McKenna, . who was among the 22 British subjects murdered by the Japanese on the island of Tarawa, was formerly on the staff of the Post and Telegraph Department at Reefton.

The funeral of the late Mr W. G. Garrard, of Christchurch, left Bellamy’s Chapel for the Greymouth railway station on Saturday evening, after a service conducted by Rev. P. Kirkham and atended by trotting followers, journalists and others. The cremation took place in Christchurch to-day.

The funeral of the late Mr Frederick Pitman, of Rotomanu, took place at the Karoro Cemetery yesterday morning, after a service at St. Paul’s Methodist Church. Rev. E. S. Hoddinott conducted the services at the church and the graveside, being assisted by Rev. H. A. ChiTds and Mr W. Vallance, of Rotomanu.

The Greymouth Branch of the Engine Drivers’, Firemen’s and Cleaners’ Association tendered a smoke concert at Herb. Moore’s, last evening, to three members of the staff who have retired from the service. They were Messrs W. Reilly, Assistant Locomotive Foreman, who has retired on superannuation after 40 years’ service following a prolonged period of sick leave; J. J. Crooks, an engine driver, who has retired medically unfit; and G. T. Martin, a fireman, who has resigned to take up another position., Mr. N. G. Clark, Chairman of the Branch, presided, and Mr. J. Dowdall. a member of the executive, presented each of the- guests with an envelope of notes, accompanied by good wishes.
