MARIST DEFEAT KORODALE.

Turning on one of the brightest displays of the season, Marist defeated the Kor.odale (Wellington) Rugby League side, at Wingham Park, yesterday, to the tune of 32 points to 24. Marist led at h,alf.-tjnie by 15 points to 10, and the match throughout held the interest. Possibly Korodale’s preference for the high tackle was an element in costing them the game, lhe teams were:— Marist: W. Malone; Dunn, Dargan, M. Teen; Hopkins, J. M,undy; C. Teen; Coll, W. Mundy, Watson, Wallace, Scott, P. Malone. Korodale: Gillan; McKeitch, Martin, Deas; McGuire, Hazelwood; Mallender; Kennedy, Bolland, G. Kreyl, Beban (capt.), Rimmer, H. Kreyl. Both sides displayed Plenty pi speed in .the early stages, but the territorial advantage lay with Mansi, who were tackling well. Eventually they opened the scoring when Irom a scrum the leather went to Teen, to Mundy to Hopkins, who eluded a couple of Korodale players to scorn wide out, Coll converting wnh a good kick, korodale struck back at once and were on the point of scoring when Beban put kennedy in the position to get across, but it was left to Martin, after accepting the ball from McGuire, to break across well out and score a try which was not converted. Marist at this stage lost the services of w. Malone through an injury, and he was replaced by S. Rochford. Play alternated between each 25 for some time until, after an earlier effort haa failed when Coll had fought his way over, Mundy and Teen again brought the ball within scoring distance and from a scrum it went to Dunn, who forced his way across, Coll converting. Within a few minutes Korodale. alter applying the pressure, had added two more points to their tally when Beban goaled from a penalty. The visitors were playing aggressive football, and both Martin and Beban were unlucky in not scoring, being frustrated Dy Marist’s good tackling. Beban, however, had some consolation in kicking another penalty to reduce Marist s lead to a three-point margin. The home side quickly improved their ■position again, Hookins retrieving the ball in the Korodale 25 and sending on to Dargan, who scored well out, Coll converting. Shortly before halftime Korodale added to their account when McKeitch touched down in the corner after racing round, Beban failing to convert. Play had not long resumed when Coll again displayed his prowess, adding two more points with a penalty kick after Beban had been caught offside. He had another opportunity and turned it to good effect in converting a splendid try scored by Dunn, who with Dargan in support eluded the opposition. Korodale claimed the initiative now and after keeping Marist at bay added three more points when McKeitch broke across for a good, unconverted try. Mallender nearly scored to add to their tally, but was checked, it being left to the speedy McKeitch to score in the corner alter beating the defence. Marist at this stage regained the upper hand and improved their position when M. Teen scored wide out and Coll again converted. The home side kept up the pressure and, after receiving from Watson, Dunn scored nicely behind the posts, Coll converting. They were Marist’s last points, and in the concluding stages Korodale played fine football, resulting in Hazelwood scoring a trv converted by Mallender and Martin'an unconverted try. Mr. J. Griffin was referee.

WIN FOR BLACKBALL;.

Substituting for the Thacker Shield game with Addington, postponed to next week, Blackball were at home to Ngahere, whom they defeated 28-3. At half-time the score was 9-0. C. Mountford (3), M. Ord (2), Jamieson, Mcßride, and Wright scored tor Blackball, Mountford converting two tries, and Dowell scored for Ngahere. Mr. T. F. McKenzie was the referee.

LOWER GRADES. Marist juniors defeated Runanga in the final for the Baker Shield by 14 points to 13, the winning try being obtained just on time. A. Knapp (.2), V. Meates and D. McGirr scored for Marist, Keating converting a try. Blackball juniors defeated Brunner, 38-5. In’ a fourth grade match, Brunner defeated Marist, 40-12.
