'The Mayor (Mr W. Stewart) presided at ‘a special meeting of the Kumara Borough Council, held in the Masonic Hall, on Monday evening, when Crs. Benvon, Hamer, McNabb, Haines, Evenden, Malcolmson, Gilbert and Murphy were present.-. The Mayor, speaking of the loss by fire of the Memorial Hall, wherein the Council office together with all contents were lost, offered the use o! a building at the corner of Seddon and Second Streets as a temporary o ff lC e.—The Council decided to take advantage of the offer, and it was also decided that the Library be carried on in the same building. . The Council voiced appreciation of and accepted the offer of some papers from Mr M. Mitchell. It was decided to report the loss of Borough records to the Minister of Internal Affairs. The eleventh birthday of the Kumara Women's Institute was celebrated in Trinity Hall. Mrs J. Comport over a good attendance. Proceedings opened with the Institute song and roll-call, “A Funny Story. ’ Competition winners .wore Mesclames Fahey, Caithness (Jun.). Pool, Evenden, Lorimer, McNabb and Miss Ann Birss. Songs were given by Mrs J. McNabb and Mrs Hyndman, and a recitation by Mrs W. Evenden. Several games and community singing added interest to the varied programme. The accompanists were Mesdames Lorimer and McNabb. Supper was served by the Ladies’ Committee, and the .President called on Mrs Caithness (sen.) to cut tiie cake with eleven candles.

The Kiumara School Committee met. Present* Messrs John fleetly (chairman), G. Malcolmson, F Budkin, B. Becker, and 11. I lamer (horn sec.). The Chairman introduced the Headmaster ( Mr Thomas Kelly) and extended to him a cordial welcome. The retiring Headmaster (Mr L. J. Thwaites) wrote bidding ‘the Committee farewell and thanked members Cor faithful help and cooperation. It was reported that the tell-tale of the heating system was out of order, and it was resolved to ask the Board’s foreman to rectify the detect. Mr O'Brien wrote in regard to representations made for additional accommodation for the infant classes at the school.

Mr R. Semple wrote regretting his inability to accede to the Committee’s request for a bus service or an amended time-table so that Secondary Scnool children from Kumara to Paroa could reach school earlier. .Mr W ,S. McClymont, Secretary of the Swimming Centre, wrote commending _ Kumara on the progress made with the learners’ swimming pool and offering any desired assistance.

The Board’s architect forwarded plans and specifications for the bath and asked lor schedule of quantities ol material, and prices, together with the estimated cost of wages, etc. The Secretary stated that with Mr Malcolmson/s asisstance the desired inI’oi mation and estimates had been forwarded to the Board. . The Committee approved the planting of trees in the school ground and considered the Lawson Cyprus the most suitable tree for the school grounds. If 50 small plants were available the Committee would have them planted. During the term holidays the school had been scrubbed by the caretaker and the floors had been re-oiled. It was resolved to acknowledge with thanks the donation of £ 1 10/- from the Cobbers Club to the swimming bath fund. Accounts passed for payment totalled £4/13/1
