INTER-CLUB DEBATES
RUNANGA v. ST. COLUMBA Members of the Runanga Debating Society were guests of the St. Columba Chib at their rooms last evening, when two debates were held. In the first debate on the subject, “That the State boarding out of children. is to be preferred to the orphanage system,” St. Columba won by a margin of 13 points. Marks were awarded as follow:---Runanga (affirmative): F. Baxendale 70 (reply 13), L. Downes 72, D. Williams 66, team work 20; total, 241. St. Columba (negative): J. Keating 71 (reply 10), L. Power 75, I. Thompson 78, team work 20; total 254. In the second debate on the subject, “That the principle in the phase, ‘My Country, Right or Wrong,’ is pernicious,’! the St. Columba team won by a margin oi 20 points. Marks were awarded as follow:—St. Columba (affirmative): M .G. Kelly 77 (reply 11), O. Morris 79, W .Gilbert 76, team work 10; total 253. Runanga (negative): Ron. McTaggart 68 (reply R. McDonald 67, J. Kelly 79, team' work 10; total 233.
The judge, Mr W. D. Taylor, gave a constructive criticism of individual speakers. Members of both clubs returned thanks to the judge for his assistance. Supper was served at the conclusion of the debates!
