“MAN AND HIS WORLD.”
AUCKLAND, Sept. 12.
Comment on the controversy which arose over Bishop Liston’s recent criticism of the book “Man and His World,” by Mainwaring, authorised for secondary school use, was made by Bishop Simkin when opening the session of the Anglican Synod today. “The danger of the teaching of the book lies in its humanistic conception of Jesus Christ, which it teaches and which has proved to be inadequate to unify men and nations,” said Bishop Simkin. “In what way can this teaching be combated? Only by the definite teaching of the Divinity of Jesus, Flis Divine Sdnship, His claim for the surrender and allegiance of wills. As Churchmen and as Christians we must examine closely the teaching given to our children and must be prepared to demand that, though under the present system religious belief may not be taught in the schools of the land, neither shall there be taught anything which is opposed to religious belief or belittling of truths which we regard as fundamental and immutable, because we believe them to be the revelation of God Himsell.’
