Mr. D. Shankland and Mr. A. W. Keyes, of the head office, Mechanical Branch, Transport, Department, who have been visiting Greymouth, left, last evening, on return to Wellington.

Mr. F. Bird, Secretary-organiser of the National Party on the West Coast, left this morning, for Christchurch, to attend a reception by the Canterbury Division of the party to the visiting Parliamentary delegation.

The following Greymouth candidates were successful in the State examination held in June for maternity nurses. The names are not in order merit: Adams, M.; Bloxam, D. M.; Croft,' J. E.; Jane, M. H.; King, M. B.; Profit. M. A.; Sims, K. E.

The death took place at 35 Cranford Street, Christchurch, this morning, of Mr. Thomas Davidson, aged 78 years. Until his removal to Christchurch some years ago he was employed by the Greymouth Sash and Door Company for a long period. He served in the last war.

The King has appointed Field Marshal Viscount Gort, at present Governor and Commander-in-Chief at Malta, to be High Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief for Palestine, and High Commissioner for TransJordan, in succession to Sir Harold Mac Michael, whose term of office will expire on September 3.—8.0.W.

The Minister of Mines (Mr. Webb) to-day visited the Blackball, W allsend, and Runanga mining districts in comoany with the members of the visiting Parliamentary delegation. Mr_ F. Collindridge and Mr. A. Maclnnes He ouened the new school at Hatter s Terrace during his visit to that district. The party will leave for Westport to-morrow morning after attending a public meeting at Runanga this evening.

The death occurred at Christchurch yesterday, of Thomas Henry Groom, a former resident of Greymouth. Deceased, who was in his 62nd year, was a. son of the late Mr. and Mrs. S. Groom, and spent the most of his life in, Greymouth as a butcher, leaving to reside In Christchurch some years ago. Besides his wife, he is survived by two brothers, Robert and George (Greymouth), and two sisters. Mesdames W. Wick (Runanga). and A. Gilbert (Paroa). The funeral will take place at Christchurch to-morrow afternoon.
