FARMERS’ CONFERENCE
WEST COAST REMITS. Messrs W. Searle (President), H. Beckett (vice-president), H. V. Palmer (Westport), and J. Mulcare (secretary) of the West Coast Farmers’ Union and Mr D. B. Jellie (chairman of the West Coast Council of Primary Production) will attend a conference of South Island farmers at Timaru on May 17 and 18. The following remits from the Ngahere branch of the West Coast Union will be considered at the conference:— (1) That the Government be asked to make an immediate start on augmenting the electric power supply for the South Island, and that it investigate the many projects on the West Coast. (2) That we ask that the timber royalties received by the Crown be spent in the province from which they are received as far as is practicable. (3) That the Government be asked to make all arrangements now so that a direct air service to Australia from the South Island can be commenced immediately after the cessation of hostilities. (4) That this conference requests an increase in the price of milk to the producer. (Note: All costs have risen sharply, feed being nearly 50 per cent, dearer than last year). (5) That we urge on the Government the desirability of direct shipping to Australia from both the east and west coasts to assist in South Island development, and that a deepsea harbour be constructed on the West Coast.
