FLOOD OF DIVORCES
CHELMSFORD BISHOP’S PROTEST
(Rec. 11.15 a.m.) LONDON, Jan. 20. “One of the most sickening features in the long divorce lists is the large proportion of titled persons from whom a decent example might be expected, but whose names disgrace this miserable catalogue,” said Dr. Henry Wilson,~Bishop of Chelmsford, in his Diocesan Chronicle. The Bishop stated that morals in the sexual sense are becoming worse.” It would probably be regarded as injurious to the war effort if those who knew the facts were to speak out on certain aspects of this matter. We have really reached a pretty pass when the number of divorce cases is so'great that a Judge recommends that Magistrates should deal with undefended cases.”
The Bishop suggested that divorce should be made more difficult.
