Trip Cancelled: Raging Main’s trip to Trentham to contest the Douro Handicap has been cancelled. He was scratched yesterday.
Going Too Hard: The “Dominion” states that, in addition to Kindergarten Classform, who broke down, The Raker, Happy Ending, Amigo and Battledress were handicapped by the hard going in the Wellington Cup.
Four on End: Cor day, who won the Anniversary Handicap at Trentham, has scored wins in his last four races. He is a four-year-old gelding by Man’s Pal-Charlotte Corday, by Shambles-Charmilla, by Charlemagne 11-Armilla, by Castor-Necklace, by Musket-Locket.
Double Winner: Inscrutable, who won a double at the Vincent meeting is a three-year-old gelding by Salma-gundi-Fleet Lady, by Anomaly-Miss Fleetham, by Fleetham-Miss Signal, by Signalman. The Smuggler and other winners trace to Miss Signal.
A Good Performance: Whackie did best of the unplaced horses in the Telegraph. He was back in the third bunch till they reached the course proper and twice tried to push his way through into the clear without success. He was right up fifth, a good performance in the circumstances.
Cheap Yearling: Don Quex, the winner of the Wellington Cup, and also winner of the Marton and Manawatu Cups in recent starts, was bred at the Flaxmere Stud, Hastings, and was sold as a yearling at the national sales in 1938 for 50 gns. to Mr. C. W. Boyd, owner of Classform, and was later passed on to Mr. C. W. Jackson, owner of Sweet Biscuit. Mr. Jackson sold him to Messrs J., and L. McMillan, his present owner.
Bored Badly: A Wellington writer states that Lord Chancellor did not race kindly in the Wellington Cup and that he bored badly after covering about a mile. Merry May, who was second to Lord Chancellor in the Auckland Cup, was always near the rear, but her stablemate, Foxola, ran a good race, being among the leading bunch for a mile and threequarters. Palfrey appeared to have his chance spoiled by a check but he ran on again in the straight.
Unlucky?: With a clear run it is probable that the Railway Handicap winner Sweet Biscuit would have added the Telegraph Handicap to her good record. She secured a good position in the early running, but when Theolateral crowded in slightly from the outside at the end of two furlongs Sweet Biscuit had to be eased back on the fence and this check probably cost her the race. Once she regained the clear she finished with resolution, but did not have sufficient ground in which to make up the leeway.
