Air. J. Guerin left this morning, for Wellington, via Nelson.

Mrs. J. O’Brien left, yesterday, for Wellington.

Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Mitchell left, to-day, on return to Dunedin.

Dr. D. Al. Logan and Mrs Logan, who have been spending a holiday in Nelson, have returned to Greymouth.

Major-General Albert C. Wedemeyer has been appointed deputychief of staff to Lord Louis Mountbatten in the South-east Asia Command.—B.O.W. ,

The death occurred yesterday at Timaru, of Mr G. G. Ferguson, an evangelist, who visited Greymouth and Cobden on various occasions. He is survived by his second wife and family of four, three children being the issue of the first marriage.

A London cablegram stated that owing to failing health, Mr. Cosgrave has resigned the leadership of the Fine Gael Party, but is not resigning his seat in the Dail. Doctor T. O'Higgins will take over the leadership ot the Party.

Mr Maisky, former Russian Ambassador to Britain, has been awarded the Red Banner of Lacour, for his outstanding services, and also on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday (states a London cablegram ).

The appointment of Mr. E. Angus Jones, General Alanager for New Zealand of the Vacuum Oil Company, to the Board of Directors of the Company in Melbourne is announced and he will leave shortly for Australia. Mr. Jones joined the Christchurch branch of the company in 1928 and became General Manager for New Zealand in 1939. He is the first New Zealander to be appointed to the Board of Directors. —P.A.
