Mr. R. J. Orbell left this morning, on return to Auckland. Mr. R. T. H. Dale will leave this evening, for Oamaru. Mrs. L. F. Casey left to-day on return to Christchurch. Mr. M. J. Phillips left this morning, for Gisborne. Senior Sergeant G. F. Bonisch left this morning on transfer to Palmerston North. He was accompanied by Mrs. Bonisch. A Sydney cablegram announced the death of Dr; Samuel Angus, who rose from a farm boy to a world figure as a theologian and author. A motion of condolence with the relations of the late Mr. A. M. Carroll, a former member of the Board was passed at a meeting of the Grey Electric Power Board last evening. Traffic Inspector J. Ramsay, Transport Department, Christchurch, who has been appointed to succeed Inspector J. R. Richards at Greymouth, will arrive by to-day’s express. At a meeting of the Nelson Education Board, Mr. F. J. Collier, who has been on relieving duty at the Cobden School; was appointed sol teacher at Mawheraiti School. Guests at Revingtons Hotel include: Mr. W. P. Morler, Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Gower (Christchurch), Mrs. A. M. Copland (Timaru), Miss H. I. Young (Oamaru), Mr. J. O. Graham (Franz Josef), Lieut. H. C. Priss (Blenheim), Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Baskett, Miss M. Baskett (Auckland) . A cablegram from Barcelona stated that Brigadier Hargest, who escaped from a war prisoners’ camp in Northern Italy, arrived there on November 16, after crossing the FrancoSpanish frontier on foot. He reported immediately to the Spanish authorities, who granted him partial freedom.

The death is announced from Wellington of Colonel Albert Scotney, a retired officer of the Salvation Army. For ten years he was in Victoria, Queensland, and Tasmania and was then transferred to New Zealand, where he was appointed to social work. He managed boys’ homes first at Island Bay and then at Eltham, and in 1920 was appointed Men’s Social Secretary where a special feature of his work was his interest in and labour for prisoners. In 1924 he was appointed Property Secretary. He leaves his wife, a son, who is a naval officer, and a daughter, Mrs. Boudinet (Christchurch). —P.A.
