[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.]

REEFTON, November 18. Mr E. Williams (Wellington), a former Reefton resident, is visiting the district.

Mr J. Crossman presided over an attendance of 20 men who met to further the formation of an Inangahua Deer Stalkers’ Association. The Chairman reported that the sub-com-mittee appointed to consider rules had drawn up a set. Mr J. K. Patterson submitted the proposed rules to the meeting. Mr H? Smith moved and Mr J. K. Paterson seconded that the set of rules be adopted. The following officers were elected:—President, Mr J. H. Crossman; secretary, Mr J. K. Patterson; treasurer, Mr R. Haldane; committee of six members: Messrs A .C. Hobbs, W. Butcher, D. H. Williams, W. Russell, C. Hunt and J. Smith. It was resolved that Mr J. Hunt (Maruia), T. Arnold (Inangahua Junction), and B. Mirfin (Ikamatua) be invited to attend the first meeting of the Committee, with a view to stimulating interest in the country areas. It was suggested that the Association endeavour to revive the Reefton Miniature Rifle Club.

The Chairman reported having received from the Minister of Internal Affairs suggestions that legislation be brought down to make deer-stalking safer. The Minister asked the Association for suggestions. The subcommittee made a number of suggestions. The following are to oe forwarded to the Minister for consideration:—An amendment to the Arms, Act suggesting giving the Association and like associations in New Zealand the power to report to the local police on the advisability of the issue or non-issue of firearms permits to persons who request same for .303 and nigh-power rifles. Power to be given to the associations to have some measure of control over the distribution and sale of ammunition for rifles for deer-stalking. It was considered that the control of the issue of ammunition would impose a safety measure, in that cartridges would not be issued or sold to those inexperienced in /the use of a. rifle. A system of zoning stalking areas was considered, and the institution of a penalty for careless shooting SjSO, but neither suggestion was adopted for submission to the Minister.

Cup matches in the Waitahu Golf Clubs competitions were concluded during the week-end and resulted:— Humphries Cup: C. D. Doyle v. G. R. Tinner 5/4, C. D .Doyle v. F. Watts g/ 4 - .Brewery Cup: S. Patterson and 1. Gilmer v. A. Reid and F. Watts 1 up in the final.
