Mr. B. Stephens, of the Mechanicians’ Branch of the Post and Telegraph Department, Greymouth, who had been stationed here for almost •two years, left, this morning, on transfer to Christchurch, where he was formerly employed.

The appointment of Captain E. S. Summers, of New Plymouth, as Sec-retary-organiser of the Christchurch Metropolitan E.P.S. at a salary of £6OO a year was confirmed by the central committee at its meeting yesterday. There were 13 applicants for the post.

Mr H. L. Harker, Grand President of the United Ancient Order of Druids, North Island Jurisdiction, who has been visiting lodges in the Greymouth district, left,. this morning, for Hokitika. Later in the week he will proceed to Christchurch and Wellington.

A cable messag'e received from London last night announced the marriage of Miss Nina Isitt, elder daughter of Air Commodore L. M. Isitt and Mrs. Isitt, who recently returned to New Zealand from Canada and England, to Flying Officer Michael Wood, a member of the Royal Australian Air Force.

In honour of her approaching marriage, Miss G. N. Lower was the guest at a kitchen gift function at the home of Mrs. W. Braithwaite, Marlborough Street, last evening, tendered by St. Paul’s Young Women’s Guild, of which she is the Secretary. The good wishes of members were conveyed to Miss Lower by Mrs. R. Pepperell (Vice-President) in handing her a large number of gifts on behalf oi members present. Rev. E. S. Hoddinott conducted an enjoyable programme.

Sergeant Major A. C. Hulme, V.C., 1-ft this morning, to return to Nelson. He was met last evening by the executive of the Grey Returned Services’ Association, Mr G. G. M. Mitchell presiding, in the absence of the President and the Vice-Presi-cWn<- both of whom are ill. Mr Mitchel’ and Lieut.-Colonel C. R. Duke welcomed Sergeant. Major Hulme, who in reply, spoke of his experience in Crete. He left later for Hokitika where he was entertained by n-wmboro of the Hokitika R.S.A. While in Greymouth Sergeant Major Hulme was also the guest of representatives of local bodies and was welcomed by the Mayor of Greymouth (Mr F. A. Kitchingham).

Mr Charles Thomas Tassell, Assistant Sunervisor of the Telegraph Bianch of' the Chief Post Office, Greymouth, died in the Greymouth Hwpitoi yesterday afternoon, alter ■-> ion? illness. He was a native of WalVwrnstow, Essex, and had resided I-, the Dominion for 39 years. Mr Tasroll had been in the service of the Post and Telegraph Department for 32 years, having previously been statomto at Wellington, Wanganui, and Hokitika, residing at the. latter place fpr four years as Supervisor. He had. been in Greymouth for six and ahalf 'years, being a most popular officer. He took an intimate interest in the local branch of the P. and Tr Officers’ Association, having been Chairman last year. He saw four years’ wrvico in the Great War. Mr Tassell is survived by his widow, two' daughters, Missts Audrey and Marie Tassell, and one son Lawrence, all of Cobden; his parents, Mr and Mrs C. T. Tassell, of Marton; two sewers, Mrs Hunn, of, Wellington, and Miss Maud Tassell, of Marton; and one brother, George, who is in the Trentham Military Post Office. The funeral will take place at the Karoro Cemetery to-morrow morning.
