MORLAND SENTENCED
THREE YEARS’ IMPRISONMENT
CHRISTCHURCH, May 19.
Leo Edward Morland, found guilty by a jury on a charge of the theft of 3,650 ounces of gold, valued at £31.496, the property of the Arahura Gold Dredging Company, was sentenced to three years’ hard labour by Mr. Justice Northcroft in the Supreme Court, this morning. His Honor said that Morland had been in custody in the United States and in New Zealand for over two years and he thought it proper that he should take that into consideration. His Honor added that counsel and the jury had urged that undue opportunity was presented to Morland to commit the crime, but it was his duty to say publicly that opportunity did not justify or condone crime. Morland was engaged on wholesale plunder of his employers and had made elaborate preparations.
