At the monthly meeting of the Kumara Borough Council the Mayor (Mr. A. B. Spiers) presided, also present being Crs. W. Lawrence, G. Ellery, B. Becker, W. J. McNabb, J. Murphy and A. Fensom. An application from the Convent School Committee for the services of D. Hanna in the Convent School grounds was granted subject to the Social Security Department’s approval of this workman’s re-employment at the State School grounds. A request from J. Stewart for reduction in rental charged for lease of endowment land was held over for review of all leases.

An application from the Kumara Picnic Committee for the use of the Recreation Ground for their annual Dienic was granted and it was agreed to allow them to use the Borough lorry. Copies of the report of the conference re post-war industry were received and it was agreed to remit the amount of levy asked. Letters from Hon. Jas. O’Brien and Hon. P. C. Webb regarding present postal services were received. Arrangements are to be made at an early date to install a stamp-vending machine at the Kumara P.O. The Council resolved that further efforts be made to have a long distance slot telephone installed. A reply was received from the Acting Minister of Finance that sales tax on pipes for water supply connot be remitted, and it was resolved that information asked for be supplied. The postmaster wrote requesting that the oak tree next to the Post Office be removed as it was keeping the sun from the upper storey of the building and the leaves were creating a nuisance in blocking the spouting. It was resolved that a special meeting be held next Thursday to consider all outstanding rates and the leases and that the main highway, Seddo’n Street, be repaired at once as the hole was dangerous.
