THEFT AND RECEIVING DUNEDIN, October 21. In the Supreme Court to-day Mr. Justice Kennedy sentenced Victor Royden Curline to two years’ imprisonment with hard labour for breaking and entering and theft, and to nine months’ imprisonment with hard labour for receiving stolen goods, the sentences to be concurrent. BRICKLAYERS’ AWARD WELLINGTON, October 21. Complete agreement was reached by the Conciliation Council to-day concerning the Dominion Bricklayers’ Award. Hours will be 40 a week, the minimum wage for journeymen 2/101, an hour, and overtime at time and a half for the first four hours and double time thereafter. The case will come before the Arbitration Court to-morrow for approval.

MANUFACTURER CONVICTED WELLINGTON, October 21. Sydney Klinberg, managing director of the Tiny Tots Clothing Manufacturing Company, was found guilty in the Supreme Court to-day of the theft of 43,000 yards of georgette and 5000 yards of kabe crepe, valued at £1179, belonging to Woolworths (N.Z.), Ltd. Klinberg was found not guilty on an alternative charge of receiving goods from Raymond John Watts knowing that they were dishonestly obtained. The jury made a strong recommendation to mercy. Mr. Justice Blair remanded the prisoner for sentence. MERCER-BOOKMAKER. CHRISTCHURCH, October 21. When a mercer’s shop owned by Maurice James Scott at Lyttelton was raided by the police, betting material was found on the premises. The sequel to this was heard in the Magistrate’s Court, to-day, when Scott was fined £2O, in default 21 days’ imprisonment, by Mr. F. F. Reid, S.M., for using premises as a common gaming house. Scott was doing bookmaking in conjunction with his ordinary business, said Senior-Detective H. Nuttall. Scott was “in a fair way of business,” as £lB in bets, none of them larger than 10/-, had been taken before 11 a.m. SOLDIERS AND CAR. NEW PLYMOUTH, October 21.

Three young soldiers, James Ernest Arthur Ward, of Stratford, Owen Mervyn Howse, of Dannevirke, and Stanley Thomas Port, of Whangarei, were charged in the New Plymouth Police Court to-day with the unlawful conversion ,of a motor-car at Hawera on October 10. They were arrested near Waitara last night by Senior Detective Jarrold and three constables. Detective Jarrold said that a considerable quantity of goods was found in the car which might be the subject of further charges, and he was granted a remand of the accused till next Tuesday. The accused when arrested were wearing civilian clothes, said Detective Jarrold.
