RACING AND TROTTING

October 31: —Wellington. November 7:—Napier Park. November 7: —Avondale. November 14:—Napier Park. November 21:—Canterbury. November 21: —Levin. November 21:—Southland. November 21:—Waikato. November 28:—Canterbury. TROTTING October 24, 26.—Greymouth. October 24, 26.—Auckland. October 26.—Oamaru. October 31.—Wellington. October 31.—Invercargill. November 7, 14: Metropolitan. November 28: Forbury Park. December 5: Waikato - CambridgeThames. December 26: Westport. December 26: Ashburton. December 26: Gore. Rehandicapped: Scottish Dale has been rehandicapped from 7.13 to 8.2 in the Shorts Handicap at Trentham on Saturday. Enrich’s weight in the Wainui Handicap has been raised from 7.12 to 8.2.

Jockey Fined: The race committee of the Pakuranga Hunt fined the jockey F. E. Baker £5 for riding in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup Steeplechase while not the holder of a jockey’s license for the current season, 1942-43.

Promising: Although he has a cumbersome name, Kaitere Maati is showing in his track work that he should make good. Last season the son of Mr. Standfast and Princess March ran a brace of thirds —to Representative and Kentish at Ellerslie, and to Bonny Pay and Merry May at Waikato.

New Quarters: Surveyor-General, who was a useful performer around this circuit, has been taken over by H. Gray at Takanini. Although his entry upon an active career was delayed till he was a five-year-old, he has been a good winner and should carry his account further.

Loss of Brood Mare: The Stonyhurst Stud had the misfortune to lose a valuable young brood mare. Winning Rival, a six-year-old by Bulandshar from Rivalry. She lost her first foal (by Winning Hit) and the mare herself died later. Winning Rival won the Welcome Stakes, and as a four-year-old she was successful in the Ashburton Handicap and the Midsummer Handicap.

Half-brother to Foxola: Laddie Boy, second in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, is a halt-brother by Vermeer to Foxola. Like Foxola, he is owned by Messi’s O. Nicholson and Eliot Davis, and he should develop useful form during the season. Foxola incidentally is looked upon by Aucklanders as one of their best racehorses, and there is no doubt she is a genuine galloper.

Melbourne Notes: A Melbourne cablegram stated that after his poor display in the Catillield Stakes, Velocity heartened his Caulfield Cup admirers by a brilliant trial over ten furlongs in 2.JIJ at Mentone yesterday. He was ridden by his Cup pilot, O. Phillips. Skipton went a mile in 1.49, but his Cup supporters are a little anxious as the horse has not been seriously tried since his Stand Handicap win. The trainer J. Fryer, gives an assurance that Skipton is now belter than he was last season. RICCARTON NOTES [SPECIAL TO “STAR.”] CHRISTCHURCH, October 20. All Night’s win in the Teschemaker Handicap was somewhat unexpected by the public, although the stable showed confidence in the gelding’s ability to master the distance at. his first attempt. His form was certainly in strong contrast to that at Wingatui, where the going was almost the same. All Night showed his ability to stay in a pronounced manner, and if he had been nominated for the New Zealand Cup he would have come into serious discus s i o n. The sale of the Phaleron Bay— Golden Rod two-year-old fell through owing to the proposed purchaser not completing his side of the contract. A few days later the latter was prepared to complete the deal, but the colt’s owner refused to reopen negotiations. The youngster is due to have his first race at Motukarara next Monday. Scottish Dale was responsible for an outstanding performance in winning the Flying Handicap at Washdyke, and provided she does not have any cheek in her progress, she will come into strong favour for the Stewards’ Handicap. Unfortunately, she is not as sound as her trainer would wish, and was affected by the race for a day or two, but is expected to be right again for Trentham, where her prospects look very bright. The Solicitor-General three-year-old Grilse attracted attention by her good race at Washdyke, her first for nearly 12 months. She won the Welcome Stakes last year, but was later affected by lameness and had to be put aside last Summer. Prince Shad made a reappearance at Washdyke, and did well enough to suggest he will not be long in again making good. He was spelled after his sensational win at the Grand National meeting, and put on more weight than his owner-trainer desired. Prince Shad claims Paper Money as his sire, and appears likely to develop into one breed’s best Good Scout, Don’t Forget, Sally Lunn, and Eulogist are Riccarton horses in the list of nominations for the Auckland Cup, and King Herod is the only southerner in the Railway Handicap. Foxhaven has been nominated for the Clifford Plate on the third day of the meeting. Dash o’ Dublin impressed by his win at Washdyke, and is now likely to carry on as a winner. He is a halfbrother by Salmagundi to a useful horse in Passaform, who would have built up a better record than was the case but for unsoundness.

Skyrena has failed to stand up to training and has been retired to the stud by her trainer, M. Conza, who has recently recommissioned Roy Bun.
