HOKITIKA NOTES

[OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. |

HOKITIKA, August 18

At a meeting of the Hokitika Borough Council, the Mayor, Mr. A. R. Elcock, presided. There were also present: Councillors W. H. Stopforth, K. Aitken, G. Havill, L. S. Ross, G. Heinz, D. P. Stuart and T. W. Duff. Accounts amounting to £1,703/18/3 were passed for payment. The abattoir report stated: Stock slaughtered for the month of July amounted to 30 ewes, 35 heifers, 64 bullocks, 230 sheep, 5 lambs, 33 pigs and 24 calves. Two bullocks were condemned. Fees for the month amounted to £9B/6/10, and for the corresponding month last year £69 2/6. The Town Clerk reported on the tests taken at the pumping station, which proved that the pumps were not delivering the supply of water expected of them. Various reasons were put forward.—lt was decided to ask Mr.' Fairmaid, Greymouth Borough Engineer, to inspect the station and submit a report. The Town Clerk reported on the cost of upkeep of the cemetery. Councillors stressed the unfairness of the Borough having to carry the whole cost of the upkeep of the cemetery, while the County, which used it as much as the Borough, refused to contribute its share. —It was resolved that owing to the loss on upkeep the interment fees be raised by 10/- as from September 1, 1942. It was decided to permit carriers to take sand from the beach, but only at places approved by the Council. The estimates for the current year were considered and adopted. The rates to be levied to remain at 27in the pound on the unimproved value, the same as for the previous year.
