MONTHLY MEETING

HOKITIKA, August 12. At the Westland County Council meeting Cr. T. O’Neil presided. The following members wore present: Crs. R. Bond, N. Harris', P. J. McLean, G. Rowley, R. Bradley, W. Searle, .1, Donovan and W. A. Jamieson. The meeting was short, the business being completed in about three-uarters of an hour.
The overseers’ reports were read and approved. Cr. Donovan moved: “That it be suggested to the New Zealand Government that in any public commemoration in December next of the three hundredth anniversary of the discovery of New Zealand by Abel Tasman, Dutch navigator, the claims of the Okarito district (where land was first sighted on December 13, 1642. and where a memorial marks the event) to participate on the occasion, be not overlooked.—Carried, Clerk to prepare report. Correspondence dealt with included:—
From District Engineer, Greymouth, reviewing the Hokitika River erosion al Camelback, and concluding with the inclination to leave the position alone lor the time being to allow nature to effect necessary alterations, but suggesting a few drift fences from the river bank be erected by the settler.—Settler to be notified. From Commisisoner of Crown Lands on same subject, stating the erosion was serious, though not affecting Crown Lands immediately, and the Department would not be concerned in any costs to be incurred. From National Service Department, asking that all matters affecting administration be submitted through District Controllers, who have delegated powers. From H. H. Richardson, Marton, expressing thanks, for message of good wishes for long County service. From C. Donovan, replying he would be south in about a month’s time respecting conference suggested, From J, H. Crupper, Waitaha, expressing gratification that the water was taken off the Settlement Hoad, and praising the Overseer’s attention to the locality. From O’Neil Bros., Tetaho, thanking the Council for attention to protection work on Rotokino Road. From J. Stewart, Kumara; R. J. Eggeling, Okuru; F. G. Fitzgerald. Wainihinihi; G. P. Rea, Totara; W. S. Connor, Maintain; G. J. Thomson. Wataroa; applying for renewal of; si aughter •■ house 1 icenses.—Granted, subject to usual conditions.
