FAT SHEEP PRICES IMPROVE

CHRISTCHURCH, May 21

A rise of 2/- per head in the prices I for fat ewes was recorded at the Addlington market, yesterday, and fat I wethers were dearer by 1/- per head. Store ewes and lambs maintained recent values. There was an oversupply of beef, and prices eased. Fat pigs sold well. Store sheep.—An entry of 641 lambs, 736 wethers, and 1415 ewes. Prices were much on a par with those of last week. For the shipped ewes, top price was 3(1/3. Local ewes ranged (Tom 7/3 to 18/6. Wethers brought up to 23/-. Fat lambs.- Fewer than 1000 head were offered, and butchers’ heavy lambs rose 1/6 per head. Rates for export lambs were unchanged. Butchers operated between 29/- ana 32/-. Fat sheep.—An entry of about 4000 head, with a firm market. Butchers' owes improved by 2/- per head. Best wethers went up'about 1/- per head. Extra prime wethers, to 34/10. Prime wethers. 30/- to 32/6. Prime me-dium-weight wethers, 26/6 to 29/6. Ordinary wethers, 24/6 to 26/-. Light wethers, 24/-. Exira prime young ewes, to 31/7. Butchers' prime young ewes, 23/6 to 27/-. Ordinary ewer.. 19/- to 22/6. Export ewes, to 16/6. Fat cattle.—A heavier penning cf about 650 head met with a weaker market, and on an average all classes were down by 15'- to 20 - per head.

Best beef ranged from 38/- to 4.1/per 1001 b, medium 35/- to 37/-, ordinary 33/- io 34/6, and light and rough down to 22/6. Extra prime heavy steers, to £l9/2/6. Prime heavy steers, £l4/10/- to £l6/5/-. Prime medium-weight steer:;, £l3 to £l4/10/-. Ordinary, to £l2/10/-. Extra prime heifers, to £ 14/7/6. Primo heifers. £9 to £ll. Vealers. — A full yarding, in excess of butchers’ requirements, and the sale was* lightly easier. Large runners. £4/8/6 h/£7/3/6. Others, £3 3/6 to £4/3/6. Good vealers, £3/8/6 to £5/1/-. Medium vealers, £2/11/to ‘£3/3/6. Largo calves, 38/- to

52/-. Medium calves, 24/- to 35/-. Small calves. 6'- lo 22/-. Store cattle.—-The sale was little better than recent rates. Top price was £9/1/- for a line of 24 two ami a-half years Black Poll-Hereford cross steers; similarly-bred two-years heifers £5/13/6. Shorthorn cows £4 13/-. Fat pigs,-—The porker entry was good deal lighter, and only the bes* quality pigs were sought. Over the latter half of the sale competition improved and values were better by 3/- to 4/ - a head. Choppers were in medium supply. There was a medium yarding of baconers and some good quality pigs were forward. Buying was keen from the outset, values being firm on last week’s rates. Light porkers, 34/6 to 44/6. Medium porkers 47/6 to 52/6. Heavy porkers, 54/6 to £3/4/6. Average price per lb. 61d to 71d. Light baconers. £3 6/6 to £3/14/6. Medium baconers, £3/19/6 to £4/4/6.
