A London cablegram stated that Mr. Cyril Lakin, barrister, journalist and radio commentator, has been selected by the National Government as candidate for a South Wales byelection.

A Hollywood cablegram announced the death of Hale Hamilton, stage and screen actor, at the age of 62. He originated the role of “Get Rich Quick Wallingford.” He had toured New Zealand.

The appointment of Captain V. C. Ostenl’eld, previously in the employ of the Anchor Shipping Company, as relieving Harbour Master and pilot at Port Nelson has been approved by the Marine Department.

The Leader of the Opposition (Mr. S. G. Holland) left Christchurch, today, for Gore, Invercargill, and Dunedin. He will leave Christchurch next Tuesday for Hokitika, and will visit Greymouth next Wednesday.

The death has occurred of Mr. Ravmond Bartlett Stevens, chairman of ‘the United States Tariff Commission since 1937. He was vice-chair-man of the United States Shipping Board during the last war and an adviser on foreign affairs to the Thailand Government from 1926 to 1935.

At a meeting of the Grey Electric Power Board last evening, a motion of condolence was passed with the relations of the late Mr. Daniel Baybutt. The Chairman (Mr. J. B. Kent), said that Mr. Baybutt was one of the first members of the Board, having been present at the first meeting on March 20, 1923.

Queen Wilhelmina of The Netherlands, has appointed Dr. Piet Kasteel, to be Governor of Curacao and Netherlands West Indies, to succeed the present Governor, who, at his own request, has been relieved of office, and received an official expression of thanks for many important services rendered.—B.O.W.

The Hector Memorial Medal and Prize for the encouragement of scientific research in the Dominion has this year been awarded by the Royal Society of New Zealand to Dr. H.’ H.
