THE SPORTING WORLD

RACING AND TROTTING MEETINGS TO COME.

February 21—Tolaga Bay. February 21.—Westland. February 21—Waikato. February 21^—Woodville February 28—Rangitikei. February 28—Greymouth. February 28 —Te Aroha, TROTTING FIXTURES February 21—New Brighton. Meeting Abandoned: The Wairarapa Racing Club has decided not to hold a race meeting at Easter, in view of war conditions.

Final Reminder: Owners and trainers are finally reminded .that acceptances for the Westland meeting to be held on Saturday next close at 7.30 o’clock to-night.

Turned Out: Fine Art, a brilliant pacer over a mile and a-hall, buc hardly a true two miler, has been turned out. and may have seen the last of the racecourse.

Hokitika Candidates: The following Hokitika candidates worked attractively at Riccarton. yesterday morning:—Miss Saone (live iurlongs in 1.3 3-5. the last lour in 4!) 3-5); St. Cloud and Stabilise (seven furlongs in 1.29 1-5, the last four in 50 3-5); Winchelsea beating Sir Gundi (six furlongs in J.. 17 2-5).

Paper Money Youngster: Jolly Tinker, a two-year-old filly by Paper Money from Costume, is being prepared by R. Pentecost at Riccarton for the Easier racing. She is solid and of good size, and will carry the same colours as Jolly Time and Ryetown, those of Mr W. R. Adamson.

Maiden Stakes: Following are the weights for the Maiden Stakes to be run at Hokitika on Saturday:—Gentility, Assemblage. Locrain Crossmaglen, Thoraide, Princess Warden, Jocanta, Gamebird, ' Perpetuate, Stormalong, Whiphand 8.12, Maybe,. Scarlet Thread, Stepway, Miss Saone,, Recompense. True Mate, Golden Dollar, Full Pitch 8.5,' Pharmacist 7.7.

Unusual Warning: The judicial committee of the Gore Racing Club issued an unusual warning to a trainer on Saturday, when they recommended R. E. McLellan not to put his apprentice, K. F. Brown, up on Sailing Lady in a race again, and to explain to him the rules of riding, as laid down-in the Rules of Racing. The warning was the result of an inquiry into Interference suffered by Wild Career in the running of the principal handicap.

Better Chance: Hearth, who is to race at Hokitika on Saturday, appears to be better placed in the Anniversary Handicap than in the Thompson Handicap'. She has 11.8 in the Thompson, which is a six furlongs race, and 10.6 in the other race which is over .a mile, and she has done her best racing lately over distances greater than' six furlongs. It is interesting to note; that Miss Waitarere, who has no winning form over a mile, receives three stone and six pounds in the mile race from the Paladin mare, while m the six furlongs event, Miss Walla-

rere receives four stone and one pound. If Miss Waitarere is to win one of the races her best chance must be in the six furlong event.

Finished Fast: Jolly Ruler, and Sterling Lad finished faster than anything else in the last race at Otaki on Saturday. Soutane ran into the lead less than a furlong from the post, and she stayed on to hold off a determined challenge from Jolly Ruler, who finished exceptionally fast to get within half a length of the winner, with Sterling Lad, who backed out as the barrier lifted, and finished very last over the last two furlongs, a neck away third. Sterling Lad had won earlier in the day. TROTTING DRIVER'S DEATH. AUCKLAND, February 17. The death occurred to-night, of Mr. Arthur Thomas Newdick, 51, manager of Newdick Bros., Ltd., butter, produce and general merchants, as the result of a trotting track accident. Mr. Newdick was closely associated with trotting for over 20 years. In conjunction “with his brother, he successfully raced a number of horses. In. his fall while driving Moko Direct in the Papakura Handicap at Epsom last) Saturday, Mr. Newdick received severe head injuries. Three other drivers were less seriously injured.
