HOKITIKA NOTES

[our own correspondent.] During the past week, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church members have been marking the 75th anniversary of the forming of the church in Hokitika, and among the visitors in connection with the occasion are Rev. J. Davie (Moderator-elect) a former minister here and Miss Douglas (daughter of the late Rev. W. Douglas, who ministered at St. Andrew’s for 26 years). Rev. J. Davie was the preacher at yesterday’s services. One of the main features of the past week was the entertainment at tea of the Sunday School children in St. Andrew’s Hall on Wednesday evening last.

The monthly meeting of Westland members of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club was well attended. Mr. Malcolm Davidson presided. Reports for the previous four weeks were:—April 6: Mt. Graham by T. Ward and J. Dove. Easter Holidays: Taipo River and Mt. Mclnerney by F. West, P. Pugh and party. The partv had the services of a pack horse and were able to travel up the river flats as far as Dunn’s Creek, about 12 miles up from the Christchurch Road. On Mt. Mclnerny numerous deer were encountered, but only three good heads were obtained. April 9 and 20: Mt. Brown and Wainihinihi were traversed from the Arahura by J. Kulsen, and J. Chapman. The route up Mt. Brown from the north was described. There followed a discussion on the condition of the Styx Valley track and a motion was passed recommending that the secretary write to the County Council, for advice and if possible assistance for the elimination of a particularly dangerous bluff near Breastworks Creek.
