ANZAC DAY APPEAL
£44,210 FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS

WELLINGTON, April 26
The radio and telephone Anzac Day appeal, on behalf of the patriotic funds, resulted in a total of £44,210 being received. The National Patriotic Fund Board, in making this announcement, to-day expressed its warm appreciation of the assistance given by thousands of voluntary workers throughout New Zealand in achieving this magnificent result in one evening. BULLER QUEEN CARNIVAL Six weeks’ hard work on the part of committees working for the queens in the Buller carnival culminated in a final effort on Saturday, when the result was announced to a packed house at a dance at the Theatre Royal. The carnival realised £8127/3/10, £2,127/3/10 above the original objective of £6,000. The winning queen was Miss Jean Robertson (Air Force) with £2,995 14/-. Miss Flora Hay-Mackenzie (Army) was second with £2,707 14/6, and Miss Valmai Phipps (Navy) £2423/15/4, third. The result was in doubt until it was announced at 11.50 p.m. In the morning the Navy led with the Army second and Air Force third, the money in totalling approximately £4OOO, which was doubled during the day.
